Overview
Cholera is an infection of the small intestine caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The main symptoms of Cholera are profuse, watery diarrhea and vomiting.Transmission occurs primarily by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated by faeces of an infected person of animal (even for asymptomatic patients). The severity of the diarrhea and vomiting can lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, even death in some cases.
The primary treatment is with oral rehydration solution (ORS) to replace water and electrolytes; if this is not tolerated or does not provide satisfactory recovery, intravenous fluids can also be used. Antibiotics are beneficial in those with severe symptoms to shorten its duration and severity.
Worldwide, it affects 3-5 million people and causes 100,000 - 300,000 deaths a year as of 2010. Cholera was one of the earliest infections to be studied by epidemiological methods.

DeleteSooooooo, electrolytes can help overcome cholera?? oo
ReplyDeleteReplenishing the electrolytes of a patient does not kill the bacterium. It only helps in maintaining the electrolytes in the patient to prevent him or her from going into shock or seizure.
DeleteTwo of the most important electrolytes that the body needs are sodium and potassium.
DeleteSodium: controls blood pressure
Potassium: involved in nervous functions
If these electrolytes are absent, the body will have a hard time functioning. And severe lack of these electrolytes may cause death.
This is surely an interesting piece but I would really like to know more about the main symptoms especially 'profuse'? What does profuse mean or as in what does it do to people?
ReplyDeleteTechnically, 'profuse' means in large amounts.
DeleteIf profuse vomiting is what you meant, it means that the patient will vomit large amounts of fluids. Since large amounts of fluids are lost, the patient will be severely dehydrated and lost large amounts of electrolytes at the same time. If not given sufficient amounts of fluid, the patient will go into shock.
Lets say if we are suffered from cholera...and technically we lost a lot of amount of electrolytes in our body, so can we get back those so-called 'lost electrolytes' by drinking isotonic drinks or taking supplements?
ReplyDeleteYes, isotonic drinks or sport drinks contain relatively higher amounts of electrolytes compared to pure water. Common sport drinks include 100 Plus and Gatorade which can be bought at convenient stores all around the world.
DeleteOh and can you please explain about the Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). How it is used to replace water and electrolytes? Tell us more about it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply.
DeleteHere is the link to learn more about oral rehydration soluton. It is quite interesting. Hope it helps. :)
